“Last night, the Department of Justice busted an international ransomware ring responsible for extorting and attempting to extort hundreds of millions of dollars from victims in the United States and around the world.” US Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said in a statement.

Since June 2021, the group has targeted more than 1,500 victims worldwide and has extracted more than $100 million in cryptocurrency ransom payments. The FBI’s operation to break into the Hive network began in July 2022 and managed to provide more than 1,300 decryption keys to help victims restore their data and systems, including critical infrastructure.

Hive usually targets the victim by stealing sensitive data (emails, documents, photos and videos), and then encrypting computer files, according to the agency. The organization will then demand a Bitcoin ransom for the decryption key needed to recover the files and demand additional money in exchange for a promise not to publish the stolen information on the dark web. If the victim does not pay, Hive will reveal the captured information.

According to new data from blockchain forensics firm Chainalysis, revenue from ransomware attacks decreased by 40%, from $766 million in 2021 to $457 million in 2022. The company described Hive’s removal as a success for cryptocurrency, law enforcement, and national security. He blamed the drop in ransom payments on victims’ increasing reluctance to pay and increased knowledge of cybersecurity.

“Cybercrime is an ever-evolving threat,” Garland said. “But as I have said before, the Department of Justice will spare no resources to identify and bring to justice anyone, anywhere, who targets the United States with a ransomware attack.”
