Official: Stocks of bottled milk in Tunisia fall 78%

White meat production in Tunisia in 2022 decreased by 3.4% and egg production decreased by 0.3% compared to 2021. Inventories of packaged milk also recorded a decrease of 78% in the first eleven months of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021.

The data, which was recently published by the National Observatory of Agriculture, in the form of a dashboard, reflects a decline in white meat and dairy diets about two months before the month of Ramadan, which generally witnesses a growth in demand for these consumer products.

In December 2022, Tunisia produced about 8.7 thousand tons of red meat. Production was distributed to 4.6 thousand tons of beef, while the production of white meat decreased to 134.8 thousand tons in 2022, compared to 139.6 thousand tons in 2021.

Meanwhile, the production of eggs for consumption decreased from about one billion and 747 million eggs in 2021 to about one billion and 743 million eggs in 2022, which is a slight decrease.

The decline in the performance of the dairy system in 2022 is evidenced by a decrease in the collected quantities by 5% to 746 million liters, and the quantities that reached the dairy collection centers by 8% to 597 million liters. As a result, Tunisia witnessed a decrease in its strategic stock of milk from 32.1 million liters in 2021 to 7.2 million liters in 2022, which affected the distribution model and the availability of this essential product to consumers.
